| Punchin Skanks Live @ The Venu review by Sleazegrinder I saw an early incarnation of this band about a year and half ago, and I remember saying something about them "Plumbing the sludgy depths of hollow boned, cat scratch drunkabilly with the panic button firmly jammed on 'Go, motherfucker, Go!' speed" in the local press. That's still pretty accurate, as evidenced by "Punching Skanks", a live set recorded this February in Boston. Takes a brave band to put a live record as their first major release. Well, that or a broke one. Either way, this is exactly what the Midnight Creeps are about- slutty rock and roll played with punk rock ferocity that's raw, immediate, and close enough to touch, if you don't mind losing a finger in the process. The Richard Hell cover ("Love comes in Spurts") is indicative of the kind of sounds to expect from the Creeps-snarly 70's New York punk rock filled with as much lust and self-loathing as it is with Bacchanalian bravado and an open invitation to scream along. They are constantly on the road, so there's a good chance you can experience all the Creepy action up close and personal some time soon. One thing though- for all you skanks, I'm pretty sure they mean the title literally, so watch out. (Sleazegrinder) |
